Box Lacrosse Developmental League

Program Overview

The Woodchuck Box Lacrosse Developmental League will run on Thursday's and Sunday's from the end of September to the beginning of November at the North Barre Outdoor Rink. The purpose of this program is to provide our athletes exposure to the game of box lacrosse in a highly competitive, instructional and fun environment!

Our development league sessions will be a combination of instruction, inter-squad games as well as games against other lacrosse clubs. Additionally, our boys and girls teams will  both compete in the Indigenous Peoples Day Invitational at the North Barre Rink on Monday, October 12, 2020.

Box lacrosse is lacrosse played 6v6 (5 runners and a goalie) in a hockey rink when the ice is melted or covered. Traditionally, box lacrosse is played on a concrete or tile surface. Some box lacrosse arenas have a turf playing surface (more common at the professional level). We are fortunate to play at the North Barre Rink; an outdoor box lacrosse arena with a grass playing surface!

What Is Box Lacrosse?

Box Lacrosse Explained

An informational page explaining box lacrosse and how it compares to field lacrosse.

Rule Modifications

Both our boys and girls programs will be playing modified versions of box lacrosse during this inaugural season. Our boys will follow the US Lacrosse Box Lacrosse Rules (link below). The USL Box Rules will be slightly modified to ensure the safety of our players as we are not requiring rib/kidney pads.

Our girls will essentially be playing field lacrosse inside of the box. The rule and equipment modifications we are making to the girls game are to ensure the safety of our players while increasing the speed and flow of the game. Both boys and girls will be playing with a 30 second shot clock. The major modifications are listed below.

Boys Modifications & Equipment

Bicep Pads**ALL BOYS ARE REQUIRED TO WEAR BICEP PADS** We have bicep pads available for purchase at our first session.

Rib/Kidney Pads - This being the inaugural season of our league, we are not requiring our boys to wear rib/kidney pads although we highly recommend that players wear rib pads.

Cross Checking - Cross checking will be allowed. Cross checks with excessive force, not intended to steer the offensive player, will not be allowed. Cross checks to the ribs or back will not be allowed.

Stick Checking - All stick checks must have visible intent to dislodge the ball from the opponents stick. Stick checks must land on the stick or gloves of the opponent. Stick checks that make contact with a part of the opponent other than their stick or gloves will be penalized as a slash at the refs discretion, depending on the visual intent of the checking player to dislodge the ball. Stick checks with excessive force and a large wind up will be penalized as a slash even if they are landed on the opponents glove.

Helmet - Boys are required to wear a NOCSAE Certified lacrosse or hockey helmet.

Girls Modifications & Equipment

8 & 12 Meter Arc - There will be no 8 or 12 meter arc. There will be no "free position shots" awarded.

Defensive 3 Seconds - There will be no 8 meter arc, therefore there will be no violation of 3 seconds in the 8 meter. Defensive players are free to move (or not move) anywhere on the field.

Softer Ball - For the safety of our players we will be using a dense foam ball with a similar weight to a rubber lacrosse ball. This modification will allow us to eliminate the shooting space foul.

Shooting Space - There will be no shooting space foul. We are able to eliminate this foul by using a foam ball that is similar weight to a lacrosse ball (explained above). If box lacrosse were to be played with the shooting space foul, it would be called too frequently (due to the smaller playing area) and affect the fast paced flow of the game. Using a foam ball allows players to safely shoot around other players that are in front of the goal.

Eye Protection / Helmets - Girls are required to wear goggles and a mouth guard, at minimum. If players would like to wear a helmet rather than goggles, they can. We allow our girls to wear a NOCSAE Certified hockey, boys or girls lacrosse helmet if they choose.
